Eva’s story

Eva came to the clinic three months ago. She was holding on to the walls and couldn’t walk straight. Her anxiety, stress levels, her head spinning and pain, and her neck pain were limiting her every day life. She is a mother of two young children and could not work or maintain her household. At night she couldn’t sleep lying down as every time she was turning over she had another episode of severe vertigo.

Po úvodní terapii a Epley manévru nastala okamžitá úleva. Po třech měsících terapie, denního režimu chůze venku a protahování Eva přestala mít úzkosti, začala normálně spát, pohybovat se v prostoru a nemusí užívat léky proti bolesti, úzkosti a zvýšenému krenímu tlaku. Bolesti krční páteře pominuly a nastal nový život.

This is a story of true lifestyle change and improved quality of life. Often the solution is simple and no drastic medical interventions or lifetime of medication is needed.

What is BPPV

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder of the vestibular system in the inner ear. The vestibular system is responsible for balance and information about our head position in space. BPPV manifests itself as a sudden sensation of dizziness, loss of balance or vomiting. The episodes are usually relatively short and the dizziness can be mild to intense. It may be triggered by change of head position. BPPV is one of the most common diagnoses causing dizziness among the general population.

Diagnosis of BPPV

Diagnosis is made when the Dix-Hallpike test. The test involves movement of the body and if positive, results in nystagmus (eye movement). Usually medical imaging is not needed.

Therapy

Treatment of BPPV at a physical therapy office is by the “Epley maneuver”. The Epley maneuver can be also completed at home, however, it is a good idea to have assistance as the sensation of dizziness can be scary. Brandt-Daroff exercises are safe alternative to the Epley maneuver. The exercises can cause dizziness or lightheadedness and you should have another person nearby. If your therapist has done Epley maneuver, you should wait 2 days before trying the Brandt-Daroff exercises.
